Inventor of Cogent TYPE-C Columns

Dr. Pesek works closely with MicroSolv, providing expert advice on technical matters related to customer support, manufacturing processes, and product development for all Cogent TYPE-C HPLC columns.

Joseph J. Pesek, is an emeritus professor of analytical chemistry at San Jose State University, and has had a distinguished academic career. He earned his B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1966 and his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1970, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at UCLA. His academic journey began at Northern Illinois University in 1971, and he joined San Jose State University in 1978. During his tenure, he served two terms as the chair of the Chemistry Department and was the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research from 2000 to 2003. Dr. Pesek has also been a visiting research professor at prestigious institutions such as Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, Universite d’Aix-Marseilles, Monash University in Melbourne, and the University of Queensland in Brisbane. He was honored as a Camille and Henry Dreyfus Scholar in 1991 and 2001 and was named the President’s Scholar at San Jose State in 1993.

Dr. Pesek’s research has focused on the synthesis and characterization of separation materials for chromatography, leading to 250 publications in peer-reviewed journals and three patents. Notably, his patented HPLC column technology features a modifiable silica hydride surface, enabling the retention of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds. These innovative materials, the Cogent TYPE-C HPLC columns are commercially available through MicroSolv and our global distribution network.
