Headspace analysis can be optimized by using the proper vial and cap combination. While crimp caps (aluminum and steel) will provide the best long-term seal, this is only true if the caps are crimped on properly with a calibrated crimping tool. For some caps, it takes significant hand pressure to get the seal needed and this can cause a lack of compliance in the laboratory. If too much force is used, you can produce broken glass vials, cap dimples, folds in the septa material, aluminum wrinkles. With too little force you can product poor seals and lack of compression.
For this reason, we offer screw caps for headspace. These 18mm, high precision threaded, metal, screw caps with a fitted septa offer an alternative to traditional crimp caps. They can be applied more rapidly to the vial but must be matched with the vial thread and thread pitch for a proper seal.
